Imagine the frustration when you put your heart and soul into a great song... and it isn't received well because there's no hook!

You're not alone. A frustrating epidemic is sweeping across genres of music where artists trying to break in are being sent back to the songwriting drawing-board over a chorus.

In a tweet, the legendary Quincy Jones sounds off how "We need more songs not hooks!" Why are we hearing more and more songs that don't touch the soul but somehow go viral? Simply put, if your song has a chorus that stays stuck in people's heads then it'll probably get popular due to repetition.

An artist who chooses not to write a chorus isn't doing something wrong. Songs like “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen or “I Got a Story to Tell” by the Notorious B.I.G. had NO chorus and did VERY well. You can show your versatility in other ways as an artist without compromising your sound.

Here are some ways to be heard without the conformity of a catchy hook:

Beats with hooks:

There are several instrumental tracks for sale and lease with hooks already recorded onto the track, especially on beatstars.com. Writing a song with your own style and creativity inspired by the track or hook is all you'll have to do.

Collaborations:

Collaborating with artists on an open verse track that already has a chorus is another way to flow on a track without having to write a chorus or change up your writing style to suit the trends.

Co-Writing:

This is where you aren't used to writing hooks for your songs but you still want the chorus to sound like something you'd say. This is where you'd want to enlist the help of another artist you've worked with before, a mentor or even your hypeman/woman. These are people who already know and appreciate your sound and won't take away from it by contributing.

Often influencers that artists submit tracks to only listen to the first 20 seconds and sometimes just the chorus. You as the artist must understand that when it comes to your project they aren't always listening to hear if your sound is good, but marketable (catchy) because that means profit. So artists, always stay true to your sound; just make sure you use some versatility to show that your creativity has marketability.
